What is a school board?

In a public school system the citizens themselves control the public schools. A school board is the governing body of a school district and is made up of elected officials.

What makes a good board member?

The Oregon School Boards Association recommends people who are advocates for public education, believe in the democratic process, have respect for district employees, skilled decision makers, willing to devote time and energy to a volunteer position, have the courage to stand up for their convictions and can accept the will of the majority, consider running for their local school board. Boards typically meet one or two evenings a month. Before the monthly meetings, board members study the materials. There are also committee meetings, work sessions and appearances.

To better understand the role of a school board member please see the Oregon School Board Association's Code of Conduct for School Board Members.
