In August, through a strong display of community partnership and engagement, several organizations hosted a vibrant and inclusive registration fair for La Grande School District students ranging from pre-school through eighth grade. The event, held at the district’s Wildcat Center, showcased the power of collaboration between educational institutions and service organizations, all working toward a shared goal: supporting families and enriching student experiences.
Partners in Education and Community Support
The fair was a joint effort between La Grande School District, Eastern Oregon University Head Start (EOUHS), EOU Reading Clinic, Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS), Blue Mountain Kids, InterMountain Education Service District (IMESD), and Umatilla Morrow HeadStart. The partners pooled their resources and creativity to design an event that was both functional and fun, offering school registration services alongside engaging activities for children and families.
Activities That Sparked Joy and Connection
Each community partner hosted a unique activity station, transforming the registration process into a festive celebration. Students and their families enjoyed a variety of interactive experiences, including:
Corn hole games
Rock painting
Sensory tile exploration
Giveaways and prizes
Educational bingo
Event organizers encouraged families to visit at least six community partner booths, with three key stops being Blue Mountain Kids or EOU Head Start, La Grande School District, and the EOU Reading Clinic. The intention was to connect families with essential resources and services.
Food, Fun, and Family Engagement
In addition to the activities, food and refreshments were provided for both students and parents.
“The fair served as a one-stop hub where families could complete school registration, learn about local programs, and enjoy quality time together,” said Marissa Loiland, Director of Early Learning Initiatives at IMESD.
A New Chapter at the Wildcat Facility
Hosting the event at La Grande School District’s Wildcat Center, which opened in September 2024, added an extra layer of excitement. The modern space provided ample room for activities and gave families a glimpse into the future of community-centered education in La Grande.
Loiland said with the success of this event, participating organizations have set a strong precedent for future partnerships that prioritize student well-being and family engagement. “This registration fair was more than just an administrative event—it was a celebration of collaboration, community spirit, and the shared commitment to nurturing young learners.”
