Fifth grade students at Central Elementary are planning for spring already. Students in Lead the Way, a fifth-grade leadership group, planted about 600 daffodil and tulip bulbs at the school this fall.

The bulb planting happened in late October. The students planted them in whiskey barrels instead of in the flower beds because last time they were planted in the ground, the weeds were really hard to manage.

Principal Monica West said the students had a great time planting the bulbs, which included lots of red tulips to represent Cougars red. “When those red and yellow pops of color explode in the spring, it will be great!”

The primary purpose of Lead the Way is to help students gain confidence and develop leadership skills; it also offers students something to do other than athletics.

School counselor Teresa Dowdy, Coordinator of the group, said students are asked to represent Central at the highest level; they need to be interested and dedicated to making Central a positive place for all students and they help welcome and recognize students and staff members.
