Students in fourth and fifth grades at Central Elementary have been committed to working on their physical wellbeing for several years now. The Cougar Fitness program is in its fourth year this school year and going strong!
The voluntary program is led by P.E. Teacher Jake Chamberlain. It’s a morning workout class for students, who exercise for 30 minutes before school on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. According to Chamberlain, the goal of Cougar Fitness is to build the foundations of strength, agility and speed where students engage in a fast-paced, educational setting to improve physical health and mental health. It is recommended that elementary-aged children should get at least 60 plus minutes of physical activity every day.
Cougar Fitness is organized into a circuit of exercises, with occasional game days on Fridays.
“We will teach our students how to respond to being challenged mentally and physically and how to handle it positively. It is important to note that each and every student, despite his or her ability level, is as important as the next,” Chamberlain said.
Fourth and fifth grade Central students interested in joining Cougar Fitness should contact the school office or email jacob.chamberlain@lagrandesd.org.
Keep going strong, Central Cougars!
